Unlike Warhol's Screen tests, this piece was (obviously) heavily edited. Kandis is represented by Night Gallery in LA and has shown at Frieze, London. I collected all of my left-over business cards from 4 art galleries and 1 expat magazine, where I worked during (or just prior to) my time in Berlin. I had about 800 cards left over from stints at Gagosian Gallery, Goff+Rosenthal Gallery (RIP), BodhiBerlin (RIP), Wilde Gallery (RIP) and ExBerliner magazine. Based on my experiences working in the Berlin art world, I wrote the Manifesto shown above and printed it as the printer ink was running out. I then made the text into a stamp and stamped one side of each of my business cards. I exhibited these cards in a 1-night only solo exhibition by installing them in a mosaic pattern on the wall, vaguely reminiscent of a Native American pattern. Exhibition guests then purchased the cards (3euro-7euro each) and removed them from the wall. Cards were also sold via Kickstarter for those who could not attend. The project is fully described on the Kickstarter page. This exhibition prompted a journalist for the German newspaper Der Tagesspiegel to pen a 5-page article on the Berlin "art world cartel." Textiles and furniture, fashion and architecture were all encompassed by the movement. Above all else, beauty and a "return to nature" were the two prevailing themes around which the Art Nouveau philosophy took shape. The artists presented in Nouveau Art Nouveau each appropriate degrees of the aesthetic in a range of media--from traditional forms of painting to more modern, digital processes--while still alluding to the original movement, its permutations and its influence as it emerged in Paris (as Art Nouveau), Germany (as Jugendstil), the UK (as the Arts and Crafts Movement) and beyond. You’d be forgiven for thinking of Brooklyn artist Emilie Trice’s “Millennial Pink” as a shameless grab for your Instagram feed. And you would be wrong. That Pepto Bismol-hued color, splashed all over her virtual-reality installation, is really a Trojan horse bearing a grim message. The installation’s Astroturf carpet and tree branches (denuded of leaves) are coated not in millennial pink but in “Phos-Chek,” a hot-pink fire retardant that’s been used, recently, to extinguish wildfires that have devastated forests in California, Colorado and areas in Siberia, Brazil and the Congo. The piece is one of 29 works at Miami’s first white-tented satellite fair devoted to digital art.
