Marble rolling pin laser-engraved with Simone de Beauvoir quote & QR code
Edition of 10 + 3 APs | approx. 18 x 3 x 3 inches

The quote on the rolling pin - "Women should defend themselves with violence" - is from a 1972 interview with Simone de Beauvoir for Ms. Magazine. A QR code is laser engraved onto the bottom of the rolling pin's wooden base, which linked to a temporary website that included an archive of feminist texts used as resources for this project, as well as the 20min. music/video/essay “La Natural,” which traces the historical waves of feminism through pop music, remixed footage, and historical documentation. "La Natural" seeks to connect feminism to the current existential crisis of climate change and includes music by Brigitte Bardot, K.Flay, Nouvelle Vague, Discovery Zone and Šara Stranovsky, as well as cameos by Simone de Beauvoir, Kimberlé Crenshaw, Dr. Alix Rule, Aubrey Mae Davis, Jazmin Montano, Cherish Marquez and Eren Yazzie, with choreography by Colin McAdoo.

This piece (the edition + video + website) was created for an artist residency at Villa SF / Villa Albertine in October 2020 (October is domestic abuse awareness month) with re.riddle. Scroll down to view the archive, the video, and more.
